Granicus

In the spring of 334 BC Alexander crossed the Hellespont into Asia at the head of an army of approximately 35,000. At the river Granicus near the ancient city of Troy the Macedonians confronted a Persian army of 40,000. Fighting was fierce. At one point, Alexander led a cavalry charge across the swollen river, up the opposite slippery slope and into the Persian column. Terrified by the savagery of the hand to hand fighting, the Persians turned and fled. Tradition holds that Alexander lost only 110 men in the battle. With the victory, all of Asia Minor submitted to Alexander.
