France Surrenders - Vichy France

After its capitulation, the French government, headed by Marshall Petain, moved to the city of Vichy southwest of Paris. The city became the capital of unoccupied France and gave its name to the territory. Petain established a collaborative relationship with the Germans that included the civil administration of both the Nazi occupied and unoccupied regions of France. In response to the American and British landings on the shores of North Africa in November 1942, the Germans invaded and occupied Vichy France.
