May 1, 1915 the Lusitania leaves its berth in New York Harbor and heads out to sea on its final voyage. As he boarded the ship, millionaire Alfred Vanderbilt was asked by reporters about the potential of attack by German submarines. "Ridiculous", he replied, "The Germans would not dare to make an attack on the Lusitania." Vanderbilt went down with the ship.
